We all feel tired after a long day at work or a poor night’s sleep. But “cardiac fatigue” is different. This is a deep, bone-weary exhaustion that occurs even when you haven’t exerted yourself.

  • The Red Flag: If “indigestion” is accompanied by a cold sweat, lightheadedness, or a feeling of heaviness rather than sharp pain, it might not be your stomach.

  • The Connection: The nerves in the stomach and the heart are located close together. The brain can sometimes misinterpret pain signals from the heart as originating in the digestive tract. If you have no history of acid reflux but suddenly experience persistent discomfort, it’s time to see a doctor.

Your heart and lungs work as a team. If the heart isn’t pumping blood efficiently, blood can “back up” in the veins that take blood from the lungs to the heart. This causes fluid to leak into the lungs, making it difficult to breathe.

  • The Red Flag: Feeling “winded” while lying down or sitting is a major warning sign. You might also notice that you need to prop yourself up with extra pillows at night to breathe comfortably.

4. Swelling in the Legs, Ankles, and Feet

While swollen feet can happen after a long flight or during pregnancy, chronic swelling (known as edema) is a classic sign of heart failure.

  • The Red Flag: Look for “pitting edema”—this is when you press your finger into the swollen area and the indentation remains for a few seconds.

It’s normal for your heart to race when you’re nervous or after a double espresso. However, if your heart feels like it’s skipping a beat, thumping, or “flip-flopping” in your chest for no apparent reason, pay attention.

  • The Red Flag: Frequent palpitations that last more than a few seconds or are accompanied by dizziness or a feeling of faintness.

  • The Condition: This could be a sign of Atrial Fibrillation (AFib), a quivering or irregular heartbeat that can lead to blood clots and stroke if left untreated. Even if it goes away, an irregular rhythm should always be investigated by a professional.
